Children’s literature in India is growing and how! From the simple single- and two-colour folk stories of the 1950s, through the pioneering indie publishing movement in the 1990s, to the brave new world of today where children’s publishers are experimenting with themes, narratives, genres, illustrations and production, books for children in English and the Indian languages have come a long way indeed.
Publishing professionals Vidya Mani and Shyam Madhavan Sarada of Funky Rainbow took the post graduate students of Azim Premji University on a whistle-stop tour of the big little world of Indian children’s books, with a special focus on books in English.
Post the talk, our travelling children’s bookshop popped up with tubfuls of colourful Indian children’s books. Delighted to say that books never stopped flying out of our tubs right through the day, especially with Muthamma Devaya at the helm 🙂
