It’s the General Assembly of the Galactic Union, and the first delegation from SOL-3 has arrived.
The crazily assorted contingent of the third planet of the star SOL – aka Earth – carries with it all its baggage of opposing opinions, narrow views, squabbles, secrets and conspiracies familiar to our species. Toilets, racism, body size and historical injustices are only a few of the many triggers for shouting matches and name-calling amongst the 17 representatives as they await their turn to address the Assembly.
Then, to their utter dismay, they are told that only one delegate will be allowed to speak. More fuss and fireworks follow even as five rebel-delegates plot a blow-up of a different kind. As the clock ticks down, uncertainty rules: Who will be the chosen speaker and what causes will he or she support? Will SOL-3 be judged ‘ecologically and socially unfit for full membership to the Union’? Or will we marked as having ‘potential for change’? Is this interplanetary jamboree an insult, an opportunity, or a test?
With mind-reading cookies and hands-free waste disposal, Manjula Padmanabhan sets up a colourfully cast, wonderfully witty and thought-provoking stage spectacle sure to leave its audience amused, inspired and applauding.
