EVERYONE has their own story of Gandhi — and in this book, which came out of a set of four large paintings, an artist of the Warli tradition, an animation filmmaker and a storyteller come together in a unique collaboration to create a very visual Gandhi story.

The making of the book has a story as well! When Tulika saw Rajesh Chaitya Vangad’s paintings at the exhibition ‘Bapu: The Craftspersons’ Vision‘, in Delhi, they knew this was the Gandhi picture book they had always wanted to do. But how do you make a book out of a set of paintings? Nina Sabnani knew how. She had, after all, adapted four of her award winning animation films into pathbreaking books with Tulika. But Nina needed a writer. That’s when she met Ankit Chadha – trained int he Dastangoi tradition of storytelling, and himself immersed in the life of Gandhi and Kabir.

While Rajesh was inspired to paint Gandhi’s life simply because “he was like us”, Nina was inspired by the delightful details in Rajesh’s paintings that she picked and highlighted with care. There are the recurring motifs of buying a ticket and going on a journey by ship and by train, of physical work, the way he captures a moment rather than movement… Like the three creators who make the book, there are three voices that tell the story — of Rajesh the narrator, the questioning child, and Gandhiji or Bapu himself, all coming together to introduce young children to the great man called Mahatma Gandhi.
